Flat roofing leads our service list because it is what we do most of. Extensions, garages and dormers across Chelmsford get a GRP fibreglass or high-performance felt covering, fitted to shed water properly and stay tight for the long term.
We have a whole page on flat roofing in Chelmsford, and the county view sits on our flat roofing in Essex page. If your flat roof is already letting water in, start there and ring us.
Most calls we get are repairs. A leak over the bedroom ceiling, slates down after a storm, a flat roof that has started to pond. We come out, look at the roof and tell you honestly whether a repair is enough. If it is, we do the repair. If the roof is finished, we quote for a replacement and you decide.

Chelmsford has plenty of pitched roofs, from 1930s semis to newer estates, and they all fail in familiar ways. Slates slip, tiles crack where the ladder or the wind found them, ridge bedding drops out. We source matching slates and tiles and put the roof back the way it should be.
Leadwork is its own trade. Where lead flashing has cracked or been lifted, water finds the gap long before you see it indoors. We cut in new lead at chimneys, valleys and abutments so the joint sheds water the way it was designed to.
Dedicated pages for our slating, tiling and leadwork work are on the way. In the meantime, ask us on 07540 235332 and we will talk you through the job.
Roofing and carpentry under one firm is rarer than it should be, and it saves you juggling trades. Roofs sit on timber. Rafters, joists, fascias and bargeboards all need a chippy's eye, and when we find rotten timber on a roofing job we can usually fix it the same visit instead of booking a second trade.
Beyond the roofline, our carpentry covers structural and finishing work around the property. Ask what you need when we visit and we will tell you plainly if it is one for us.
Four steps, no small print.
Call, WhatsApp or fill in the form and tell us what the roof is doing.
We come and look at the roof properly, then price it in front of you.
The job gets done properly, with the right materials and a tidy site.
All our work comes with a solid guarantee.
Every town has its own patterns, and Chelmsford is no different. The inter-war streets around the city keep us busy with slipped slates and tired ridge bedding. The newer estates bring gutter and roofline problems, where a joint failure sends water down the wall instead of into the drain.
Extensions built twenty or thirty years ago often still wear their original felt, and that felt is now well past its best. Chimneys throw off cracked lead and spalling mortar. Shaded pitched roofs grow moss, and moss holds water against the covering long after the rain has stopped.
None of these are unusual, and all of them are everyday work for us. The one thing they share: the fix is cheaper the earlier you catch it.
Slates and tiles do most of the work on pitched roofs. Concrete and clay tiles cover most of Chelmsford, with slate on older and higher-spec roofs. Where a repair needs matching, we source tiles and slates that sit right on your roof rather than the nearest lookalike.
Lead does the weathering at the awkward points: chimney flashing, valleys, soakers and abutments. It is a craft material that lasts decades when cut and dressed properly, and it is a false economy to do it any other way.
On the flat side, we fit GRP fibreglass and high-performance felt, described in full on our flat roofing pages. Roofline work uses uPVC fascias, soffits and guttering, which do not rot and never need painting.
Essex weather does not give a roof an easy time. Winter frost works into hairline cracks and opens them up. Spring storms lift slates that were already loose. Summer heat dries out flat roof coverings, and autumn blocks gutters with leaves ahead of the wettest months. Because of that, the roofs we are called out to most often are not the ones nobody ever touched. They are the ones where a small fault sat quietly for a season or two and then turned into a leak.
A few habits go a long way. After a spell of heavy weather, walk round the outside of the house and look up. A slipped slate, a sagging gutter line or a patch of moss holding water on a flat roof are all worth a phone call long before they reach the ceilings inside. Inside, keep an eye on the loft. Daylight where there should not be any, a musty smell, or damp patches on the rafters after rain are all early signs that something above needs attention.
Gutters deserve a mention of their own. When they overflow, the water does not just make a mess. It runs down the fascia and soffit boards, sits against the wall, and finds its way in at the weakest point. Clearing them, and fixing the joints that leak, is small money compared with the damage an ignored gutter can do over a winter.
If you would rather not think about any of it, that is fine too. Call us on 07540 235332, tell us what you have noticed, and we will come and look. The home visit is free, the quote is free, and if the roof is sound we will tell you so rather than invent work.
