GRP stands for glass-reinforced polyester, though most people just call it fibreglass. It is brushed on as a liquid over a prepared deck and cures into one continuous skin. That is the whole selling point: a GRP roof has no seams, and no seams means no joints for water to work open.
Once cured it is hard enough to walk on, which matters on garage and extension roofs that get regular foot traffic for gutter clearing or window cleaning. The finish comes in different colours, grey being the usual choice against brickwork.
A GRP roof suits extensions, garages, dormers and outbuildings across Chelmsford. If your deck is sound and the falls are right, it is usually the long-life option. We will tell you on the visit if your roof needs deck work first, because getting that part right is what makes the system last.
Modern flat felt is nothing like the old pour-and-roll your granddad complained about. Today's high-performance felt is torch-applied in layers to manufacturer specification, and a good installation gives long, dependable service.
Felt is the cost-effective route, and on smaller roofs like garages and porches it often makes the most sense. The system is only as good as its edges and joints, so we take the trims and laps seriously. Tell us your budget on the visit and we will recommend felt or GRP honestly, not whichever is pricier.
Three faults cover most flat roof repair calls in Chelmsford. Ponding is water that sits on the roof for days after rain, working at the covering wherever it pools. Blistering is where moisture gets trapped under the surface and raises a bubble that eventually splits. Failed joints are the laps and seams where two sections meet and the bond has given up.
All three are standard work for us. We find the fault, work out why it happened and repair it properly, including the cause where we can.
If a repair is all your roof needs, we say so and do the repair. If the covering is finished, we tell you that and quote for replacement. You will never get a patch sold on a roof that is past saving. More detail sits on our roof repairs in Chelmsford page.
Some roofs are done. Felt that has gone brittle all over, a deck that has rotted under years of ponding, or repair on top of repair reaching the point where a new covering is the cheaper option over five years. When that is the truth, we say it plainly and quote for a proper replacement.
A replacement means stripping back to the deck, repairing or renewing the deck where needed, getting the falls and outlets right so water actually leaves, then fitting the new system to spec. Dormers and garages are regular work for us alongside extensions, and roof lanterns can be built in where wanted.
The three job types that make up most of our flat roofing work in Chelmsford.
New flat roofs for home extensions, complete with insulation, drainage detail and, where wanted, roof lanterns.
Tired garage and outbuilding roofs replaced with modern systems that shed water properly and last.
Dormer cheeks and roofs re-covered with GRP or felt, with the junctions to the main roof done carefully.
Four steps, and the first two cost you nothing.
Call or message us with what the flat roof is doing and where it is.
We look at the falls, the outlets and the joints before recommending a system.
The roof goes on to spec, with the trims, edges and details done properly.
All our work comes with a solid guarantee.
The covering gets all the attention, but a flat roof is a system. Insulation sits within or beneath it, and getting the buildup right stops the rooms below losing heat and stops the deck moving between seasons.
Drainage detail decides where the water goes. Outlets placed wrong, or a fall that runs the wrong way, put standing water on even a brand new covering. We check falls and outlets as part of every quote, because that is where flat roofs are won or lost.
Then there is the detailing: trims at the edges, drip edges into the gutter, upstands where the flat roof meets the house wall or a lantern. These are the joints that decide whether the roof lasts its full life, and they are the parts we refuse to rush.
If you are having a new extension roof anyway, it is the moment to consider a roof lantern. Daylight drops straight into the room and the flat roof either side stays straightforward.
We fit lanterns into new GRP and felt roofs where wanted, with the upstands and junctions built as part of the covering so there are no bolted-on weak points. Lanterns are regular work for us, not an extra we subcontract out. Ask about one when we visit and we will show you how it sits in the roof.
We are roofers in Chelmsford first, so a flat roof job in town is a short run for us. Most of our flat roofing sits inside the city and the estates around it, within a 50-mile radius that we work as standard.
For jobs further out, our county page covers flat roofing in Essex, taking in the rest of the county and London. If you are on the edge of the radius, ring 07540 235332 and ask. If we cannot reach you, we will say so.
